Hanna's Trip to Nicaragua!!

Just thought I would include three of Hanna's e-mails about her trip for everyone's enjoyment. Sounds like fun (minus the tapeworm!)

Greetings from Nicaragua!!
It is muy difficile to type at the Central Americano keyboards, but I will work at it long enough to send you a quick email. Picture a girl watching a tennis match where she really doesn´t understand the rules. That´s me trying to follow the conversations flowing over my cabasa. Nathan´s picking up on it rather quickly and gaining confidence in his coversacions, which is especially lucky because it is a mult-bus haul to get to the airport from La Concepcion. On our arrival on Thursday, we met Colin at the gate, walked a mile to the highway, caught a bus, caught another bus, walked across the border from Costa Rica to Nicaragua, paid $2 in bribes to the policia because we are chelles (whites), took a cab, caught another bus, caught another bus, and caught another bus before we FINALLY got to Colin´s casa in La Concepcion. All in all, a 120 km drive took 6 hours! We were relatively exhausted but not enough to keep me from being shaken from sleep with every perro fight outside our window in the morning (and there were many). Also, Colin´s backyard rooster, General Tso, started crowing periodically at about 3 am. That sounds rough, but it´s been pretty fun so far. It´s very warm here, but there is a breeze, which keeps it from feeling the whole 98 degrees. I have mucho stories to tell, but I will save them until I´m home on Tuesday night. Miss you all!

Well, I'm eating for two now, I think. No, that's not a subtle announcement that I'm expecting, it's a smart aleck reference to the possible tenant in my intestine, mr. parasite. Colin, though an excellent guide, was not particularly protective of us and allowed us to drink bad water on our last night in town. You know you've got trouble when you pour the final glass of water from the pitcher and find a rather noticeable creature during the backstroke among your ice cubes. Luckily, I had only had about half a glass, but sometimes it only takes one bullet to kill you. I will not go into details about my doctor visit this afternoon any more than to say, you know that look a dog gets on his face after he's dropped one on your carpet? Sort of demoralized and ashamed? That's the one on my face right now. Of course it may end up being nothing, but after reading the terrifying list of symptoms online and starting to identify with each-dizziness, fatigue, tingling in my extremities? I'm feeling all of that RIGHT NOW! I COULD HAVE A TAPEWORM THE LENGTH OF A JUMP ROPE!-Needless to say, I figured a trip to the doctor would at the very least allow me to stop picturing an anaconda snaking through my digestive organs. I'll keep you updated, minus the icky details, of course, and news of the actual trip will follow. I'm working on a good, long email, but there's just so much to share, I'm having a hard time deciding where to start.

So this was not the reaction I intended. This was really not a plea for pity, but solely an email I sent out because I thought it was funny. I am now completely fine. The doctor gave me a few hardcore antibiotic pills, and I have since finished them, and except for their side-effects, I am perfectly fine. I haven't yet seen test results to know if I did actually have a parasite, but I doubt that my track record for being overdramatic will be affected-I'm sure it will end up being nothing significant. No worries!

Hey!
Glad that the blog is finally catching on. Jen, I was taken off of the contributor list because Google must have purchased the web page since I last posted and required me to provide some more info and sign my life away again. Well, Hawaii was spectacular but the Jet lag sucks. Corbin hasn't slept through the night since we got back and it's getting old. Last night he didn't go to sleep until 1am and it took letting him climb into bed with me to fall asleep. We we to our friends Byron and Julie's tonight for dinner. Corbin ran around like a mad man while the rest of us ate some fabulous Thai inspired pizza. Tomorrow its back to reality. Matt goes back to work and Corbin and I will hang for the day. On Tuesday Corbin goes back to daycare and I back to work/school. We finally finished opening Corbin's Christmas presents today. What a chore. He loves the gifts but it has taken two weeks to open all of them. We have had to rearrange several areas of the house to accommodate the ever growing collection of toys. Hope this finds everyone in groovy spirits.

Amy and I thought of doing a family blog where each of us could post what we're up to whenever we want, and the entire family has access to the news, and the ability to comment on what we say. This way, I'm hoping we all feel more a part of each other's lives. I love hearing news from each of you.

Cesar and I had a wonderful Christmas at Mom's house. Matt, Amy and Corbin were here on Christmas Eve, so that's when we celebrated. They headed off to Hawaii on Christmas day. Poor Samson (their dog) - he was lost without them. It was definitely fun to watch Cesar and Corbin open presents. Corbin just wanted to play - he was bored with the presents quickly and didn't want to open them. Amy kept trying to convince him to be interested. Cesar tore through his presents before I could even see who sent them, so he was SURE Corbin got more gifts than he did. He moaned to "himself" (but loud enough so each of us could hear) about the fickle nature of Santa Claus. It makes me smile just to think of it! Ahh, the hard lessons of childhood....

I don't have my Christmas pictures downloaded yet, but here is a recent photo of me, my friend, Todd, and Cesar. Hope to hear from each of you when you have time. Love you, Jen

I'm so glad you like the idea. I haven't had time to look up everyones' addresses yet, but I will get around to it as soon as I can. Corbin is such a cutie. I'm so glad we got to see you over the weekend. I missed you all as soon as I got in the car. And don't worry about wanting to take him back. Everyone wants to take their kids back once in a while. Anyone who says differently is either lying, or taking heavy doses of valium!

Cesar is at Uncle Joe's wedding right now, probably being the cutest ring bearer in history. I wish I could see him. Hopefully, Nico will take lots of pictures. As for me, Todd is headed home from Cleveland. We'll go out to dinner with friends tonight, somewhere downtown. We've been invited out dancing, but I'm not sure I have the energy for that. School is kicking my butt. Can't wait until the end of April... then I get to go find a job. Oh well - still a break from writing and grading papers! Smooches.

I think a family blog is a wonderful idea! I hope that others join. Corbin is being super duper cute right now.. he is on his activity mat staring at himself in the fishy mirror talking to himself. Ahhh. I love him so much. Good thing he had a good day today because the last three days have been crummy. He has been a crabby critter screaming screaming screaming. I was ready to take him back. Not really!
